Hello.
I'm Joshua Kahr. I've taught real estate finance at the graduate level in leading MS in Real Estate programs for over 20 years. Alongside teaching, I'm also the owner and founder of Kahr Real Estate, a commercial real estate investment and advisory firm I've run for over 20 years. I've invested in a wide range of multi-family, office, and retail assets.
I've also built an on demand course platform for practitioners who want to learn the same tools I use every day. I'm passionate about spreading knowledge and sparking conversation.
My current academic and professional focus has been on working with family offices so that they can better manage their assets and grow their businesses. I've conducted over 50 in-depth interviews with family office principals, exploring how multigenerational wealth thinks about real estate, succession, and capital deployment. That research is the backbone of a book I'm writing on family business succession, and it shapes a lot of what shows up in this newsletter.
This newsletter is where I share what I'm actually working on. Real deal underwriting, financial modeling techniques, and the patterns I'm seeing across family offices, institutional capital, and the broader commercial real estate market. No abstractions, just what's in front of me and how I'm thinking about it.
